Just a reminder for everyone that the Manhattan Cocktail Classic Preview is this weekend, and according to organizers, almost all of the event's have sold out. This is great news for them, and great news for New York's amazing bar and cocktail scene. The weekend closes with a cocktail gala (what else) at the Morgan Library, before the main event in 2010. Freemans turns 5 years old this week, and to celebrate, Taavo, Will and the entire Freemans gang is offering customers $5 Artichoke Dip and $5 Freemans Cocktails from Tuesday 9/8 to Monday 9/14 (both lunch and dinner service). How nice of them, and congrats on making it this far. Do stop in and say hello!
Good news for all of you who aspire to drink above fast food restaurants. The Mexican themed Su Casa is officially open for business. The space hosted a friends and family night a few weeks back, and the official grand opening party will be in a few weeks. Early reviews from the shillers on Yelp are positive, especially for bathroom design. Go now before it's overrun.
The Manhattan Cocktail Classic is rolling full steam ahead, announcing the full lineup for the Seminar Preview Series that will be held October 3-4. The announced lectures include, “Have Cocktail Shaker, Will Travel” with Charlotte Voisey & Simon Ford and “Cocktails for Your Home Cocktail Party” with Sasha Petraske. Tickets go on sale next weekend, and the event sounds like a real party all around.

Our main man Pete Wells got saved by the birthday Gods when his 5 year old son was invited to Brooklyn Bowl for one of his little pal's birthday parties. How hipster sweet. While there, Mr. Wells sought out Brooklyn Brewery's brewmaster, Garrett Oliver, to see how the Brewery was getting along with its new neighbors. During the discussion, Oliver let on about his plans to combine a barleywine mixed with bacon-smoked malt and a bacon-fat-infused ale that was aged in bourbon barrels into one shocking elixir. Oliver predicts "will be the most amazingly disgusting thing you’ve ever tasted in your life. Or I shall rule the earth.” Can we hedge our bets and say that it will be a combination of the two? [NYT]
Well everyone, it's been real fun getting to know you these last few years, but our time together is coming to an end. We have decided to wrap things up at DBTH and focus on what we consider to be a billion dollar idea. We are going to try to perfect the 500 recipes in Dale DeGroff's The Craft of the Cocktail, and chronicle our experiences in a brand new blog. Then we are going to sell the publishing rights to a fancy publishing house for a shit ton of money and write a best selling memoir about our year of making every recipe in the book. Then Hollywood will come a knockin', buying the screen rights to our memoir and giving the picture a big, fat green light. It appears that one Shia Labeouf will be playing DBTH, with Chevy Chase as the concerned father, and Amanda Bynes as the woman scorned. Polanski will direct. Meanwhile, we won't be around to enjoy it, as we have begun in-patient treatment at Trembling Acres, battling our dependence on delicious cocktails. But it will be all worth it.
At a tasting event last night, LeNell Smother's officially announced she was leaving New York for Mexico. You may remember that LeNell had run a fabulous spirits shop in Red Hook until a rent dispute with her landlord forced her to close shop. She has been unable to find a suitable space, and New York will lose a real treasure. Spirited Cocktails was on hand at the event and snagged a video of her speech. [Spirited Cocktails]

More fun with booze. A Little Birdy told us that the Rusty Knot is serving up shots of Jameson with a pickle juice chaser. That's right, we said pickle juice. It may sound crazy to you, but pickle juice is actually known to be an effective tool against dehydration. And for any of you who have ever really tied one on, you are well aware that over-consumption of alcohol definitely causes dehydration. So before you go calling someone crazy, know that the good folks at the Knot have your best interests at heart.
UPDATE: A spokesman from the Rusty Knot tells us that it's called a Pickleback and the combo is "Awesome".
The rumors are true. Momofuku Noodle Bar has indeed broken out a slushie machine, and is currently serving up a delicious watermelon sochu slushie. It is a well balanced, extremely refreshing drinkie poo to kick off your meal at the Noodle. Word to the wise, Momo offers a $5 and $10 slushie, and our server automatically delivered the more expensive one to the table. Not that we minded. It was like being in high school and mixing our boozy slurpies before going to throw rocks at cars. Expect the flavors to turn over quickly, depending on what's fresh and in season.

We are always looking for ways to improve our home mixology skills, so we were quite excited to come across the Merchant Hotel Bar Book Volume II on the intertube this morning. Located in Northern Ireland, the Merchant made headlines a few years back by offering the world's most expensive cocktail, a Mai Tai made with the oh so rare Wray & Nephew 17 year rum for £750. Two please. The book includes all of the classics, some modern twists, and many original recipes from some of the leading bartenders around the world, and is a great reference guide to spice up your next fiesta.
Bonus: @PDT tweets that the Merchant Hotel's bartender Jack McGarry will be doing a guest spot at the bar tonight. It's almost 3:00, so get those dialing fingers ready.
