More Abe & Arthur's Chatter

The gossip will flow when you are about to open. Today it's Abbe Diaz's turn (on the recently redesigned Px This) to wade into the Abe and Arthur's pool, discussing the potential profitability of the restaurant, the likelihood of diners accessing Simyone after their meal, and just who put their own cash into the deal. According to the post, "I heard those guys are in deep with their own personal cash. And they might be cash poor. I know someone who was interviewing for a position… they just lowballed him all day long… it’s like The Inn [at Little West 12th] all over again… We all know how that turned out…."

UPDATE: Eater gets the first shot inside the restaurant which officially opens on 9/18 AND the iCrave juice on the design, which features "Tanned leathers, waxen, oak flooring in the main room and dark carpeting on the mezzanine, and clean, white tablecloths accent the room, while custom light fixtures engulf the space in intimate, canopied light." It's a little different than we thought it would look.

their big money guy is hirtenstein. he's in a world of shit with his real estate investments (see vanity fair article). not sure if he is involved, but he was supposed to be a big part of their growth.

From what I hear there are truths and untruths to some of the things posted on the site and in the comments.

The space looks very good from what I hear. We obivously know the location is great. from my understanding they are making sure to keep the food pricing very reasonable. However, I have heard the food is ok at best. This is from someone who has been at some tastings.

As for the financials, Hirtenstein is the 3rd M in EMM (Eugene, Mark, Michael). I don't know much about his finances but, he has to be involved. I do know EMM is expanding. They heve Tenjune & The Chandelier room. Abe& Arthurs / SL is opening and they just beat out Strategic for the Management contract on the space in the Paramount Hotel. You have to think tings are ok.

I know EMM just made a big hire internally which I assume cost a solid amount of money. I cant see how they are struggling that badly.

As for this location, the Rent is no longer amazing. When they closed the deal the rent was a steal but, lotus had a clause in the contract which saw huge spikes in the rent over the past year and moving forward. hirtenstein is a big part of the finances but, there is another guy who is the real money. Rumor around town was that there was tension between this investor and EMM as this project ran over budget and took a long time to get done. That investor could write a check for 10 of these projects himself. EMM closed this deal over 2 years ago. You have to figure that the EMM guys have to be in for a lot personally.

These guys run a very good operation. The lounge is very small and wont take much to fill it. There really isnt a restuarant in the MeatPacking that isnt busy. If they can operate it well then they will make money. The bigger question is how much do they need to make to get even because it looks and sounds like a 4+ million dollar project.

JD Stein did a spot check of the MPD last week, some were busy, pastis, some were not. Spice Table. But it is a great location to open a joint if the food is decent. Restaurants dont make it because they have a bar underneath them.

To be honest i actually feel bad for how pathetic mark and eugene are.... Tenjune could be the biggest joke in NY and the W hotel in hoboken is a complete failure... They rent a house in the hamptons and call it the estate, its pathetic...
If they use ALex at the door of new place i dont even give the place 6 months... Mark and eugene are gonna go down as losers in NY nightlife when this place dies quicker than a fish out of water. Atleast they will be done after this and no one will have to deal with that midget and arrogant loser anymore...

abe and arthur sucked. simeon makes me yearn for lotus. and that's pathetic. the scared look in eugene and mark's eyes makes me believe that the their monthlies are INSANE and it's only a matter of months before they start handing out flyers outside of the standard. space looked nice, though. impressed with what they did with it. clearly blew threw budget, but it does look good. i wish them the best of luck, even though they're such filthy little fangbangers.
