Say a Prayer for the Jane
For all that's been said about the Beatrice Inn, no one ever started a website to document their gripes about it. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the Jane Hotel, where the Jane Ballroom has inspired a blog The Nightmare on Jane Street to let the world know about just how horrible things have become in the once sleepy corner of the West Village. Beyond the video seen above, NOJS has been covering each big night with a blow-by-blow account, including:
- And everything bad about Fashion Week has descended on the Jane Hotel. The traffic guys are debuting their neon orange coats–this must be in an honor of the festivities, because it certainly isn’t keeping the traffic moving along. Music thumping through the walls, calling 311.
- Apparently the existing sound system (which shakes the neighboring walls) is not loud enough for this evening’s event! Apparently these guys told Community Board 2 that “music would be background only.” Is this set-up just for decoration? Maybe they are hosting Mime Rock tonight!
- Live band seems to be finished but quickly replaced with a DJ. Music thumping through the windows. Orange coats yelling at taxis. Obnoxious French people who didn’t get in cursing and smoking outside the window. Oh, and turns out cops were here earlier to deal with some disorderly person who got kicked out.
There are not many things that would make rich neighbors long for a run-down SRO, but I guess living next to the hottest nightclub in New York will make a person pretty desperate. No matter, the chances of the Jane losing their license before it is up for renewal (unless they are found to be breaking the law or have imminent code violations) is almost nil. But we certainly love to watch the show! [Via Curbed]

Jane has already jumped the shark! It'll be done-ski in 6 weeks, then the residents of Jane Street can go about getting a decent night sleep.
I agree. Shut it down. Euros go home.
well, its a shame. That's what happens to a place when the space is too big (hence making the door too loose) and the word spreads to the b&t crowd who causes this commotion outside the hotel. And that the Truf.
HAHA thats hilarious.. and now i know why i live down by the brooklyn brige front st.. Quiet at night and if im looking to go out ill go shit on someone elses stoop. CYA! keep on calling 311 lol
great video skills. this person has a lot of time on their hands. the music at the jane sounds like a fucking bar mitzvah.
Shame that reconciliation doesn't seem to be an option. Coming from someone who really doesn't have a sense of expenses, what would soundproofing cost? The crowds are really little fault of the venue (if Lyz explicitly says someone will not be getting in and they choose to hang out in the area, assuming they are not causing an outright ruckus, I do not see how anything can be done about that) as far as I can tell.
WAAAAH, I LIVE IN A CITY OF 12 MILLION PEOPLE AND AM COMPLAINING THERE IS PEOPLE OUTSIDE...WAAAAAH.
Get over it. Move to Jersey.
Don't like that place. Could care less... Music sucks too!
Go now, if you want to check it out. The Jane Ballroom as you know it is definitely getting shut down, and the rooftop will never happen. Sean and Eric had no problem silencing the crackpots living in the SRO upstairs, but the wealthy neighbors are something altogether different. They are wealthy, politically-connected, lawyered-up and they want there quiet block back.
I hear they fucked up big time and went against SLA and community board agreements - DJ booth with multiple Dan Agne-installed subwoofers and speakers aren't exactly "background music" and the garden area out back is amplified and facing directly at 110 Horatio's courtyard. These can be fixed easily but they'll be lucky to keep their liquor license and there is no way they will continue operating as they are now with DJs and loud, live bands and music.
Oh, and forget about the rooftop bar - it will never ever ever happen. Sean McPherson is depressed because it was always about the bar - the hotel was simply a ploy to get the bar past CB2 and get rid of the SRO residents. The dream is all slipping away. I think it all stems from the first big mistake: billing themselves as "The New Beatrice Inn". Now they really are the new Beatrice. Congrats.

thats what they get for opening up in a residential neighborhood. Too bad they couldnt have had the sense to cut their losses after opening up the maritime, in 6 months noone will care about the jane the same way noone gives a fuck about southside ( if they ever did) . The Beatrice was unique, these guys are old washed up hasbeens that need to move to florida and die slow.
On another note - the website/blog does not approve comments by anyone who posts anything that might represent another point of view. It does not give me a great deal of confidence that they have approached the management of the venue in good faith prior to launching their attack (which, while a strong word, seems exactly what they have chosen to do).
Colin - truth is Jane management sent their community outreacher, Courtney, whose toxic personality was almost as offensive as the cocaine-fueled carnival on our block each night. They tell us they are working on lowering the music (as if it's harder than turning the dial down on the DJ or firing the band). Then they do nothing about the crowds of drunken idiots yelling and smoking outside our windows.
MB,
Soundproofing - and in general the music level - is something that is entirely within the control of the venue. One would hope they do make an earnest effort to work with the neighborhood residents in that regard, and candidly I certainly don't know any of the details/specifics, so my thoughts expressed here are what has been publicly disseminated.
The crowds, on the other hand, are substantially less so. The door will explicitly turn down people and tell them that they are not going to be granted entry to the venue that evening, but that does not ensure the people are not going to lounge around in hopes that they'll find a way in. The hotel can do relatively little outside of politely asking people to not hang around the neighborhood.
Daer MB, Maybe you and your wife's sex life would improve if you did some disco dancing instead of, say, yoga. For real, ya'll West Village Nazis act like a new bar is a negro humping a white pre-civl rights. We in the East Village, largely renters, have to deal with a trillion shit bars including the new "SuperDive", a no joke beer pong-ery. But you're pissed about the Jane and James, the coolest doorman in town, and a crowd/cab-line on an empty block. Wait a sec! Isn't this the same corner where Armin from Bungalow 8 ( A FUCKING NIGHTCLUCB) had (NIGHTCLUB) Socialista (since closed). Get over it, boy. Oh Sir MB, you no have Google? It may tell you that Sean MacPh-(sp) and Eric Goode bought the hotel, you know the dudes who run hotel/resto-bar-clubs all over the city. What did you think would happen? WAKE UP DUDE: Armin was already in the hood! Jane Tavern, meanwhile, is allowed to be a shitty tourist bar, fights and all. ...Get a grip bitch, MR. SWEET MONEY C-BONE IV, Memphis, Egypt XOXO WWW.HOLLERATMEFLYBITCHES2005.COM A.K.A U know this, what-what...Oooo-KaY?
Are you guys aware how long it took to shut down the Beatrice? Over a year and guess what after 6 months it is going to re-open just in time for Christmas, and it will be a white christmas at the Beatrice where the cocaine flows like wine.
I guess thats what made it unique?
I hope the Jane becomes a NYU dorm so you rich assholes can deal with what us renters deal with in the East Village.
