Oh No! Ono Comes Down!

With Provacteur on the way, it was only a matter of time before Ono dissapeared for good. A Little Birdy was enjoying this beautiful day and came across these workers "jackhammering the Ono sign to smithereens." See you later Ono, we hardly knew ya.

When are they set to open?

As Steve Lewis says... there's only two good times to open each year...

Tanuki Tavern

writes...

a Japanese gastropub and sushi bar in the heart of the Meatpacking District will be opening the first week of October. Inspired by the concept of the traditional izakaya and named after the mischievous and jolly creature of Japanese folklore, Tanuki Tavern boasts a wide array of cocktails, sake and craft beers to pair with its extensive menu of snacks, small plates, inventive sushi, noodles and hibachi "Fire Bowl" selections. The bi-level interior of rustic woods, Japanese paper lanterns and retro-futuristic embellishments conveys Tanuki Tavern’s casual and convivial atmosphere for a quick bite, leisurely meal or late night destination.

Well when I was having dinner at the old Ono space, it was under renovation. It looked like they put basically cut the old Ono space in half - and basically about where the old sushi bar began, there was a wall up.

So i guess Tanuki and Provocateur will take a half each of the old Ono space. Provocateur will get the old Ono Gardens entrance, and Tanuki will get the 13th Street entrance.

I actually liked Ono. Also thought that 'Garden of Ono' was a nice spot. find this depressing.

I really liked Ono too. Consistently good food, and excellent service.

Rock shrimp tempura was A+.

And you had to love those 2 sunken tables in the back.

I'm quite sad to see this place go...

The problem with garden of ono was that it was seasonal... At least if provocateur does well the space can be profitable year round... Who knows though with all this competition in the meatpacking...
