More Stink On The Box
I'm a performer at The Box and can tell you that they have
a) fired the band
b) cut down on performers drastically, including nearly firing the dancers
c) cut performers pay drastically
d) accept sloppier and sloppier acts
e) the crowd gets worse and worse each month. it's now just a bunch of kids who think they are cool cuz they're at The Box. I haven't seen a celeb there for ages.
Click through to for additional dirt on the doormen, the new weekly beach party and labor pains.
f) all new door guys/cheaper door company. So if you think you can get in because the door guys have seen you there every weekend for the past year, think again.
g) last week there were only three performances, with no main show
h) there is a Tues gay night and a Wed beach party.
i) They only have one guy working the stage, and one new guy that doesn't know what he's doing. They had everything with no curtain last week, because there was no one to work it! All the stage hands were fired, so production has gone seriously downhill. The quality of the show is no where near what it used to be.
Ouch, ouch and more ouch. While discussion of the Box's downfall have long been pondered but never reality, massive staff turnover and a B/C crowd are not the best signs of economic health. Odds of this place making it to Summer, 2010 are 50/50 at best.

Shame, the concept was original and ideally offered something different to nightlife that had become pretty redundant.
The box is a genuinely unique place, so it is so sad to read about it's current troubles. Nothing stays fresh forever, and the box has had a pretty good run... Simon, Javier, and crew clearly have put in tremendous effort and $$$ to make many memorable experiences in this funky theatre. The show must cost a fortune to produce, so with the A-listers and the expense account wall streeters not around anymore, it's no surprise they are having trouble keeping the quality up. It made it through police raids, that snarky n y mag takedown attempt, and the nonsensical lawsuit unscathed, but it's going to take some serious retooling to survive the recession.
Forget the Beatrice, it's gone. SAVE THE BOX!!! It is so much more than a nightclub, it is great entertainment - (Raven!!! Bravo!) I'm hoping that the box can be saved in some form, somehow, because anyone who's been knows it is irreplaceable.
What about the doorman slapping Noah around a few weeks ago. That's never a good business plan.

No celebrities? I saw Estelle (American Boy) there last week. I hear it is still packed most nights and the gay party and the beach party are both really fun.

Story is that security let Noa in one night a few weeks back, and door guy (genc or ganz) found out, flipped out on his security and literally slapped noa multiple times.
If actually true, that is BEYOND hilarious.
Ladies and Gentlemen -- DON'T save The Box. The recession helped, but the destroyer of "The Box" is Simon Hammerstein. From the beginning he has been a childish irresponsible abuser who has been a monster to his employees (save those he finds attractive, and even then... no one is fully safe from his bullshit) and a horrible businessman from the start. Countless awful and often illegal things have happened in that den of depravity, and as one who helped build it I am most happy to watch it finally crumble to the ground. Maybe the "idea" was exciting but the execution of it, at best, was a nightmare. Don't save Simon. He doesn't deserve to be saved.
Goodbye, Box. Never come back.

I personally DEMAND that DBTH investigate further. It is shocking to me that DBTH hasn't posted something about it. Please get on this DBTH…
Noah wasn't allowed in because he looks like a loser (chubby, bald, ugly, poorly dressed in designer denim (7 for all man kind). He tried to pull rank with the security people, who he has employed in the past and Genc, who is volatile and easily excitable was not happy about it.
Noah used to be smart enough to stay in the background, he should fade back and let a jason be the face of the business, no one wants to party with people who look dress or talk (long island trash) like noah
Genc is a hothead, he isnt great at doing the door (but he is drinking/coking buddies with simon, so he won't be removed). Genc is a nice enough guy (it's not like any real winners are lining up to be nightclub doormen, so he is as good as the box is gonna get)
And Noah's pr people had the story killed from page six (as everyone knows any mention on page six is for sale)
