Breaking News: Speakeasies Are Back
Stop what you are doing and find a seat. Are you sitting? OK. We have huge news for you - faux speakeasies are popular again. We know! Crazy, right? We heard this from William Grimes, former restaurant and book critic and current obituary writer for the New York Times, who dips his toe into the Dining section this week to provide in depth analysis of just why speakeasies are so darn popular again. Our fave parts include Biff walking up and down S. 1st Street trying to find Rye, or imagining the bewilderment on his face at seeing Dutch Kills only adorned with a sign that says Bar.
"I am on a desolate street in Long Island City, and this is the address, and there is a sign that says Bar. But is this Dutch Kills? Shouldn't there be a Times Square like billboard? Mapquest told me to come here. What do I do? What do I do?"
This article would have so poignant about 7 years ago, but it hopefully serves as the final nail in the coffin to the entire movement. We don't need any more speakeasies (or weekend brunch parties for that matter). We just need good drinks at reasonable prices. [NY Times]

As much as I love most of them as a function of them in fact serving good drinks, I am forced to agree that the kitschy effect of the speakeasy has long since crossed over into the realm of tired.

Amen to that.
"We just need good drinks at reasonable prices." This, friends, is the wisdom of the age for anyone trying to open a successful new place. Ignore it at your peril.
